City of Sacramento - Community Development Department, Office of Historic Preservation

This page provides information on rehabbing historic structures, guidelines for preservation activities within the City of Sacramento, and help with obtaining building permits.

City of Sacramento Preservation Commission
The Commission is a seven-member commission appointed by the City Council to develop and recommend to the City Council historic preservation policies appropriate for inclusion in the general plan and other regulatory plans and programs of the city and to provide oversight relative to the maintenance and integrity of the Sacramento Register of Historic and Cultural Resources.   The Commission also reviews, nominates, and makes recommendations to the City Council on properties eligible for listing in the Sacramento register as landmarks, historic districts and contributing resources and reviews and approves preservation development projects of major significance and appeals of Preservation Director decisions.

California State Office of Historic Preservation
The mission of the Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) and the State Historical Resources Commission (SHRC), in partnership with the people of California and governmental agencies, is to preserve and enhance California's irreplaceable historic heritage as a matter of public interest so that its vital legacy of cultural, educational, recreational, aesthetic, economic, social, and environmental benefits will be maintained and enriched for present and future generations.

National Park Service - Heritage Preservation Services Division
Heritage Preservation Services (HPS) helps citizens and communities identify, evaluate, protect and preserve historic properties for future generations of Americans. Located in Washington, DC, the Division provides a broad range of products and services, financial assistance and incentives, educational guidance, and technical information in support of this mission. Its diverse partners include State Historic Preservation Offices, local governments, tribes, federal agencies, colleges, and non-profit organizations.

NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS:

Preservation Sacramento
Preservation Sacramento (formerly Sacramento Old City Association) is a non-profit preservation advocacy organization.  Formed in 1972, their efforts have saved many landmark buildings.  Preservation Sacramento is dedicated to protecting Sacramento's historic places and encouraging quality urban design through advocacy, outreach, and activism.

Center for Sacramento History (Formerly Sacramento Archives & Museum Collection Center)
The Center for Sacramento History is a must for those interested in the history of Sacramento, promoting the study and appreciation of Sacramento’s history.  The Center maintains an extensive archive of historic photographs and other historic materials.

Sacramento History Alliance
The Historic Old Sacramento Foundation is the guiding force behind the Sacramento History Museum.  Call (916) 264-7059 or email kpeth@cityofsacramento.org for details.

Sacramento Modern

A non-profit association dedicated to preserving and protecting modern art, architecture and design in the Sacramento region.

Sacramento Historic House is an online guide to architecturally significant buildings in the greater Sacramento area.  

Downtown Sacramento Partnership
The Downtown Sacramento Partnership offers walking tours that highlight downtown Sacramento’s history and historical features.  See the tours page of the Sacramento Heritage website for brief descriptions or visit the Partnership’s website for fuller descriptions and reservation information.

Sacramento Historical Society
The Sacramento County Historical Society’s mission is to preserve the heritage of the Sacramento region and promote greater awareness of regional history. It serves as a resource for inquiries about local history and working to educate the public about the importance of Sacramento’s history. SCHS also has many informative publications and special events listed on their website.  

California Preservation Foundation
The California Preservation Trust is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of California's diverse cultural and architectural heritage and sponsors the annual California Preservation Conference.

National Trust for Historic Preservation
The National Trust provides information on preservation programs throughout the U.S., assistance to owners of historic properties seeking to improve their property, preservation advocacy, and guidance on preservation programs.
